I have the pleasure of spending a good portion of my life in meetings. Most are very productive and the time is spent creating value for the organization I am working with. That is what I hope for from every meeting – Value! When someone from our staff is in a meeting that is floundering or disorganized we tend to jump in and get the train back on the tracks. Acting as your consultant and business partner - you expect nothing less from us. Unfortunately, we sometimes attend meetings run by folks who don’t possess the experience or leadership skills to keep a meeting properly focused.
While working with a customer on a large project I was asked to sit in on a meeting with key leaders in the organization to discuss a challenge in the design of a new process being developed for the company. I was able to observe some extremely intelligent and visionary people discuss and develop solutions to a business problem. After 1 ½ hours the team agreed on a new approach and called an end to the meeting. As the meeting wrapped up, I asked the group a couple of simple questions. “Who has the action items resulting from this meeting?” “Who is going to take this new approach to your process team and ensure your key solutions developed in this meeting are implemented?” It took the group an additional ½ hour to decide how to approach this with the teams that would actually put the rubber to the road. But, they were ready to leave the meeting assuming that the right people would take the right action.
When your strategists find solutions to business problems it is easy to assume that action will be taken. Make sure your strategy and vision is completely understood by the tacticians that can make it reality. This is where our Professional Services organization lives.
